A Tire Experience
Robert Giroux
Fellow MGB'ers, I wanted to share with you my tiring buying experience for my 72 MGB with knockoff wire wheels.
The first challenge I had was the size. You see my tires are old and the only size marking on the sidewall indicated they were 175SR14.
After much research and debate I decided to go with 175/70 R14. I did consider going with a slightly narrower tire (due to occasional wheel rub) but in the end decided not to.
Next, was to find someone who can handle knockoff wire wheels. I did see some great suggestions from fellow club members, mostly recommending Frisby Tire. After making a few phone calls I realized that just about any garage can handle the job.
I called Frisby Tire and received a quote for nearly $800 for 5 tires installed and mounted. Excessive I thought so I went a different route. I ordered 5 tires from www.tirerack.com at a cost of $367 delivered to an authorized installer, Latham Auto, in Ogdensburg. I choose this garage because of great online reviews and they have an advanced tire balancing system that applies a load to the tire, simulating road conditions, whilst balancing the tire. The cost of the install was $140. The installation wasn't without surprises. I learned that my old tires actually had rubber tubes inside. The installer was able to save them and reuse them in the new installation.
So in total, the total cost was just over $500. Even after you factor in the toll charges and gas to Ogdensburg and back the savings was substantial.
